Thomas Takes Late Model Win & Points Lead At Lake View

LAKE VIEW, SC (August 9) – Wake Forest, NC’s Christian Thomas completed a busy weekend that began on Friday at Carolina Speedway to take the $2500 Late Model prize Saturday night at Lake View Motor Speedway. The win by Thomas also broke a tie with Michael Batten to take sole possession of the points lead in the season-long race for the track championship.
In qualifying, Thomas won the pole position with a lap of 16.495 seconds. At the start, Thomas got the advantage over Shaun Harrell to lead the field into turn one. Batten, a three-time winner this year at Lake View, dropped from fourth to eighth at the start after getting on the berm in turn two. Thomas continued to lead over Harrell and Dustin Mitchell before the caution flag waved on lap 10 for the slowing car of Lance Brasington. Thomas led the field on the restart, but the battle would be for second, with Mitchell eventually moving by Harrell to take the position. Thomas would lead every lap in taking his second checkered flag of the season over Mitchell, Harrell, Ethan Wilson, and Brian Strickland. Rounding out the top 10 were Batten, Timmy Blackwell, Johnny Pridgen, Michael Marlowe, and Sanders Overman.
Benji Thompson started on the pole position and led every lap to take another Carolina Outlaw Super Street win. Aaron Ellis was strong all afternoon, but his race came to an end on lap two with a mechanical problem while he was running third. The only other caution in the race occurred on lap 11 for a spin by Ben Taylor in turn one. Following Thompson to the finish line were Donovan Jackson, David Royal, Johnny Moore, and Russell Boyd.
JJ Williams in the “Batmobile” grabbed the lead from the pole position and never looked back to win his second Sportsman Modified race of the year. The first caution of the race waved on lap six when Mike Beasley spun in turn two. Still looking for his first win of the season, Mike Bowman made a strong outside move in turn one to take second position from Jeff Tiley with nine laps to go. Williams went on to take the win over Bowman, Kyle Whitney, Tiley, and Zack Cox.
Andrew Durham backed up his win in June with another dominant performance to win his second straight Heritage Signs Street Stock race of the season. The caution waved often early in the going, led off by a frontstretch spin by John Charles on the opening lap. On the restart, Cameron Norris, IV spun on the backstretch after contact from Stephen Ford. As Norris spun back across the track, he also collected Ron Pope, Mikey Coursey, Brandon Grimsley, and Joey Wilkes. Durham dominated from there for the win over points leader Terry Caples, Robbie Turner, Ford, and Coursey.
Another big 22-car field of Fred’s Tire & Auto Stock V8s were on hand with Chucky Nicholson surviving for another win. Chip Fenoff was the early leader, but spun on lap two, handing the lead to Tom Lovett. The frontrunners woes would continue as Jason Floyd spun from second on lap eight. Then, Lovette’s luck would run out when a mechanical problem eliminated him from the race with six laps to go. Behind Nicholson at the checkered flag were Fenoff, Scott Lewis, Cameron Bosworth, and Aiden Autry.
Tyler Sealey grabbed the lead from Austin Neighbors on lap four and held on from there for the INEX Legends win. The caution flag would wave on lap nine when Joseph Sanoske got into the turn four wall. Trailing Sealey and Neighbors to the finish line were Caleb Day, Ryan Shabrum, and Josh Sanoske.
Jake Johnson took the lead on lap two when leader Richard Seals spun in turn two and led the rest of the way for his third straight Crown Vic win. Rounding out the top five were AJ Huffman, Zach Blackwell, Walter Johnson, and Seals.
Racing returns to Lake View Motor Speedway next Saturday night, August 16th for the Summer Sizzler featuring the Heritage Signs Street Stocks, Sportsman Modifieds, Carolina Outlaw Super Street, Fred’s Tire & Auto Stock V8, Crown Vics, INEX Legends, Carolina Mod Lites, and Bell & Bell Vintage Modifieds.
