Batten Late Model Domination Continues at Lake View
LAKE VIEW, SC (June 28) – Rocky Mount, NC’s Michael Batten withstood a late-race surge by Christian Thomas to win Saturday night’s Sandra Miller Memorial Late Model race at Lake View Motor Speedway.
In qualifying, Batten edged out Dustin Mitchell to win the pole position with a lap of 16.491 seconds around the 4/10-mile speedway. At the start, Batten gained the advantage closely followed by Mitchell. The first caution of the race waved on lap three when Mitchell pulled to a stop in turn three just as he appeared ready to challenge for the lead. The caution would wave two more times for single car spins by Sanders Overman and Arnold Timblin. Batten led over Thomas as the lead duo began to encounter slower traffic with less than five laps to go. Thomas closed to within a car length, but Batten held on for his third Late Model win of the year. Rounding out the top five were Thomas, Brian Strickland, Willie Milliken, and Timmy Blackwell. Bill McDaniels finished sixth ahead of Michael Marlowe, Overman, Timblin, and Ricky Chavis.
Jeff Tiley grabbed the lead from Mike Bowman on a lap three restart and never looked back to record his first career Northeast Sportsman Modified win. Bowman led on the initial start, but a caution for a Kyle Irish spin in turn one slowed the field and eventually led to Tiley’s chance to take the lead. Defending track champion Kyle Whitney was running second until he spun entering turn one on lap eight. Tiley is the sixth different winner in as many races this year in the highly competitive division. Following Tiley and Bowman to the finish line were New Jersey’s Scott Hulmes, Tim Clemons, and Whitney.
Andrew Durham made the trip from Jonestown, NC count as he put on a clinic in winning his first Heritage Signs Street Stock race of the year. Mike Manes spun in turn four to bring the caution out on lap nine. Brandon Grimsley’s top five run went away when he spun in turn two with two laps to go. While Durham claimed the win, championship contenders, Cameron Norris, IV and Terry Caples, battled hard for the runner-up spot with Norris coming out on top. Robbie Turner finished fourth with Mike Coursey rounding out the top five.
A big 22-car field of Fred’s Tire & Auto Stock V8s were on hand with Chip Fenoff taking his first win of the season. Jason Floyd appeared to be the winner but was disqualified following a technical infraction. Cameron Bosworth started third following his heat race win, but spun on lap three and would eventually finish 10th. Justin Parker and Mark Compton spun in turn two to bring out the race’s first caution flag on lap four. Following Fenoff to the finish line were Chucky Nicholson, while Boo Hickman, William Lee, and Cameron Lee rounded out the top five with a season’s best finish for each of them.
The Crown Vics had their best turnout of the season with 14 cars taking the green flag and Jake Johnson recording his second straight win. Austin Beasley brought out an early caution, spinning from the top five in turn one. Joey Wilkes and Glenn Mappus played bumper tag, with both ending up in the turn four embankment with three laps to go. Following Johnson to the finish line were Johnny Brooks, Richard Seals, AJ Huffman, and Willy Williams.
Tristen Stephenson led flag-to-flag for his second INEX Legends win of the season. The real excitement came in heat race two when two-time winner, Ryan Shabrum, flipped at least five times in turn four after contact with Josh Sanoske. Shabrum was unhurt in the scary incident. Behind Stephenson at the finish were Joseph and Josh Sanoske, Tyler Sealey, and Jeremiyah Bowling.
The Bell & Bell Vintage Modifieds capped off the night of racing with Jeremy Cumbee scoring the win over Mark Brown and Jordan Lewis.
