Dustin Mitchell Dominates Larry Long Memorial at Lake View
LAKE VIEW, SC (August 24) – Pine Level, NC’s Dustin Mitchell started on the pole and led every lap on his way to the Late Model win in the 7th Annual Larry Long Memorial Saturday night at Lake View Motor Speedway.
In qualifying, Mitchell won the pole position with a lap of 16.387 seconds to lead the 24-car starting field to the green flag. At the start, Mitchell got the advantage over Christian Thomas in what would be a fierce battle for the lead through the first half of the 30-lap event. The first caution of the race would not wave until lap 16 when David Baker pulled to a stop in turn three. The next caution would wave three laps later when Larry Blankenship spun in turn two and collected Robbie Bailey and Bill McDaniels. Mitchell would dominate from there to take the win over Michael Rouse, Dan Breuer, Shaun Harrell, and Willie Milliken. Rounding out the top 10 were Ethan Wilson, Bradley McCaskill, Michael Batten, Landon Zakalowski and Johnny Pridgen.
Jeff Tiley started first after the top six qualifier redraw and would never look back to become the first three-time winner this season in the Sportsman Modified division. The only thing to slow Tiley was a spin by Kurtis Whitney in turn four which set up a one lap dash for the win. Tiley proved to be too strong taking the win over Kyle Whitney, Mike Bowman, JJ Williams and Zack Cox.
Cameron Holloway bounced back in a big way after a disappointing start to the season to claim the checkered flag in the Heritage Signs Street Stock division. Holloway and Terry Caples swapped the lead back-and-forth over the first three laps before Holloway would take a slight edge. The caution would soon wave for a spin by Earl Petty that would collect Mike Manes, Josh Herring, and Joey Wilkes. The complexion of the race changed following the next restart when Caples spun after contact between the lead cars on the outside row coming to green. Caples, Cameron Norris, IV, Ronnie Perritt, Matthew Hodge and others all sustained damage in the ensuing melee. Following Holloway at the finish were Robbie Turner, Norris, Caples and Manes.
An equally wild race took place for the 23-car field of Fred’s Tire and Auto Stock V8s. It started when Jason Floyd and Michael Butler made contact coming around to complete lap one, handing the lead to Tom Lovett. The caution waved on lap four when Rocky Gasque overcorrected his car exiting turn two to slam the outside guardrail. Lovett’s chance at winning went away on the restart when he went spinning in turn two. Floyd would take over from there before being passed by Chip Fenoff with three laps to go. Like Lovett, Fenoff would spin in turn two and collect Gasque. Aiden Autry crossed the finish line first but came up light at the scales, handing Cameron Bosworth his first career Stock V8 win. Rounding out the top five were Chucky Nicholson, Bubba Miller, Scott Lewis, and Floyd.
Jake Johnson took the lead from Richard Seals with five laps to go and led the rest of the way for another Crown Vic win. Seals fought back though, getting on the berm in turn four, before spinning in turn two with two laps to go. Following Johnson to the checkered flag were Darrin Russell, AJ Huffman, Seals, and Walter Johnson.
Tyler Sealey passed Caleb Day on lap five and led the rest of the way to take another INEX Legends win. Tristan Stephenson spun exiting turn two on the opening lap to bring out a caution. Following Sealey and Day to the finish line were Josh Sanoske, Austin Neighbors and Ryan Shabrum.
Michael Fulwood pulled away after Jeremy Cumbee fell out with a mechanical problem to take the Bell & Bell Vintage Modified win over Wes Horrell and Jordan Lewis.
Racing returns to Lake View Motor Speedway Saturday night, September 6 for the 6th Annual Edwards Family Memorial featuring the Carolina Clash Super Late Models racing for $7500 to win. Also in action will be the Sportsman Modifieds, Heritage Signs Street Stocks, Fred’s Tire & Auto Stock V8, Crown Vics, INEX Legends, and the debut race for the Thunder Bombers at Lake View.
