Harrell Wins, Batten Claims Late Model Championship at Lake View

LAKE VIEW, SC (September 13) – Hope Mills, NC’s Shaun Harrell ended a long winless streak by taking the Sharon Gurley Late Model Tribute win Saturday night at Lake View Motor Speedway. With his fourth-place finish, Michael Batten ended the Late Model season with his first championship at Lake View.
In qualifying, Harrell blistered the 4/10-mile track and set a new track record in qualifying for Late Models with a lap of 16.069 seconds. Harrell grabbed the lead from Dustin Mitchell at the start, until the race was slowed for its first caution when Ronnie Long spun in turn one and collected Bradley Shampy and Carl Vaughn. When the race resumed, Mitchell and Willie Milliken traded second place back and forth before Mitchell finally took command of the position. The caution waved again on lap 15 when William Russell and Bill McDaniels got together exiting turn two. Harrell led the rest of the way for his first win of the season over Mitchell, Christian Thomas, Batten, and Milliken. Rounding out the top 10 were Michael Rouse, Johnny Pridgen, Bradley McCaskill, Daniel Tucker and Vaughn.
Kyle Whitney grabbed the lead at the start and never looked back for his second Sportsman Modified win of the season. The only caution flag waved with five laps to go when JJ Williams had a mechanical issue and spun in his own fluid entering turn one. Following Whitney to the finish line were Tim Clemons, Jeff Tiley, Stephen Miller and Williams.
Andrew Durham returned to a familiar place for him at Lake View, victory lane after winning the Heritage Signs Street Stock race. The only thing to slow Durham were minor spins by Ronnie Perritt and Dalton Coursey. The caution waved with five laps to go when Matthew Hodge spun entering turn one and collected Coursey and Brandon Grimsley. Following Durham to the checkered flag were points leader Cameron Norris, IV, Joey Wilkes, Kyle Rowell and Coursey.
For the second week in-a-row, Chucky Nicholson inherited the Fred’s Tire & Auto win after the apparent winner was disqualified following post-race tech. Rocky Gasque appeared to take the win but came up light on the scales. Tom Lovett led at the start but was passed by Gasque on lap five and then spun in turn four. Lovett’s night only got worse from there, slamming into Kevin Johnson’s spinning car on lap 11. Chip Fenoff came back to finish second after a spin, followed by Derek Kemper, Boo Hickman and Scott Lewis.
AJ Huffman dominated to take the win and $500 in the Crown Vic Special. The caution waved on lap two for a hard crash exiting turn four when Robbie Tumbleston got high and got into the right rear of Robert Filipiak’s car sending him hard into the frontstretch wall. The final caution flag waved with two laps to go when second place runner Greg Tumbleston spun in turn two after contact from Richard Sealy. Following Huffman at the finish were Brandon Brown, Howard Leonard, Jr., Bill Wingate, and R. Tumbleston.
Michael Fulwood was the Bell & Bell Vintage car winner on a night that saw former car owner Nathan Howell, and brothers Andy and Wade Skipper inducted into the Lake View Motor Speedway Wall Of Fame.
Racing returns to Lake View Motor Speedway next Saturday night, September 20 for the Jackson Winkler’s First Responders Night featuring the Blue Ridge Outlaw Late Models. The Southern Wedge Late Models, Sportsman Modified, Street Stock Stock V8, Crown Vics and Juicebox Racers will also all be in action.
